Foster Grandparent Program

​The Sacramento County Department of Child, Family​ and Adult Services sponsors the Foster Grandparent Program through AmeriCorps Seniors.  AmeriCorps Seniors engages people age 55+ to volunteer, sharing their lifetime of experience to address critical needs for the community and supports seniors in their efforts to make a difference.  ​​
 
The Foster Grandparent Program provides a way for age eligible volunteers to stay active by serving the children and youth in their communities. Volunteers serve at local organizations where they may help children learn to read or improve academically, mentor troubled youth, ​and help children who have other exceptional needs.​

Who can volunteer to be a Foster Grandparent?​ The Foster Grandparent Program has four criteria to qualify as a volunteer:
  • 55 years of age or older
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Willing to serve a minimum of 15 hours a week
  • Low-income
Where do Foster Grandparents work? Volunteers work with infants and children in a variety of settings:
  • ​​​Schools
  • ​Day care centers
  • ​Juvenile Hall
What kind of work do Foster Grandparents do? Volunteers can choose from a variety of activities:
  • ​​Tutor and mentor children​​​​​​
  • Help children who are at risk from dropping out of school​
  • ​​​​Help children who are at risk of substance abuse.
Are benefits provided? ​Yes, the Foster Grandparent Program provides the following benefits:
  • ​A non-taxable hourly stipend
  • ​Transportation reimbursement
  • ​Specialized training
  • ​Community Recognition
  • ​Friendship with other volunteers​​

The Senior Companion Program closed​ on June 30, 2022. The Senior Companion Program was part of the AmeriC​orps Seniors sponsored locally by Sacramento County Department of Child, Family and Adult Services.
